Stainless Steel Wire Grades
400 Series Stainless Steel Wire
400 Series Stainless Steel Wire are a group of Martensitic and Ferritic stainless steels that are known for their strength, hardness, and moderate corrosion resistance.
400 Series Stainless Steel Wire contain iron, carbon, and chromium (12–18%), and they may also include small amounts of other alloying elements such as nickel, molybdenum, or manganese.
400 Series Stainless Steel Wire Grades
Martensitic (410 and 430 series): These Stainless Steel Wire are hardenable by heat treatment and typically have higher carbon content than austenitic steels, allowing them to achieve good hardness and strength. However, they tend to have lower corrosion resistance compared to austenitic stainless steel.
Ferritic (430, 439, 444 series): These have lower carbon content and are not heat-treatable. They offer good resistance to corrosion, particularly in mild environments, but are less strong and hard than martensitic grades.
Key Characteristics of 400 Series Stainless Steel Wire
Corrosion Resistance: The 400 Series Stainless Steel Wire are more prone to corrosion compared to 300 series (austenitic) Stainless Steel Wire, particularly in highly corrosive environments. However, certain grades (like 430 and 444) offer reasonable corrosion resistance in non-aggressive environments like indoor applications or mild weather conditions.
Magnetic Properties: Unlike the austenitic series (300 series), which is non-magnetic, the 400 Series Stainless Steel Wire are magnetic. This makes them suitable for applications where magnetic properties are desired.
430 stainless steel wire is a low-carbon plain chromium ferritic stainless steel. This alloy has good corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive environments and good resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures.
410 stainless steel wire is martensitic stainless steel that provides good corrosion resistance plus high strength and hardness. It is the most widely used of the hardenable stainless steels. Used for applications where high strength and moderate heat and corrosion resistance are required.
