Stainless Steel Wire Grades
200 Series Stainless Steel Wire
200 series of stainless steel refers to a group of stainless steel alloys primarily composed of iron, chromium, and nickel, with varying amounts of manganese and nitrogen. These alloys are part of the austenitic stainless steel family, which is known for its good corrosion resistance, formability, and strength.
The 200 series was developed as a more affordable alternative to the 300 series stainless steels, such as the popular 304 alloy, by using a higher amount of manganese and nitrogen in place of some of the nickel content.
200 Series Stainless Steel Wire Composition
Chromium (Cr) | Nickel (Ni) | Manganese (Mn) | Nitrogen (N) |
16-18% | 1-5% | 5-15% | Up to 0.25% |
for corrosion resistance | but often replaced with manganese in some grades | Higher than the 300 series | can help improve strength and corrosion resistance |
200 Series Stainless Steel Wire Grades
201 Stainless Steel Wire: This is the most common grade in the 200 series. It contains a lower nickel content (around 1-5%) and higher manganese compared to 304 stainless steel.
202 Stainless Steel Wire: Similar to 201 but with slightly higher manganese and nitrogen content to enhance its mechanical properties.
200 Series Stainless Steel Wire Properties
Corrosion Resistance: The corrosion resistance of 200 series stainless steels is generally lower than that of the 300 series (like 304 and 316) because of the reduced nickel content. They are, however, still resistant to rust and oxidation in many environments.
Formability: These steels are highly formable and can be easily welded, making them ideal for a range of applications.
Strength: 200 series stainless steels have comparable strength to the 300 series but typically have lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
200 Series Stainless Steel Wire Applications
Used in areas where moderate corrosion resistance is required, such as in kitchen equipment, appliances, and decorative hardware. Common in the automotive and construction industries, as well as in food processing equipment.
200 Series Stainless Steel Wire Advantages
Cost-Effective: The reduction in nickel content makes it a more affordable option than 300 series stainless steels.
Improved Workability: Due to its high manganese content, it has good formability and can be used in deep drawing processes.
202 stainless steel is a type of chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel alloy. It is often used as a cost-effective alternative to 304 stainless steel, as it contains less nickel and includes manganese to maintain its austenitic structure. It has the characteristics of corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and high strength.
201 stainless steel wire is a type of stainless steel that has a lower nickel content than other grades. It belongs to the 200 series of stainless steels, which are known for their manganese content, which partially replaces nickel to maintain the austenitic structure. 201 stainless steel has good corrosion resistance and has good strength and durability. 201 stainless steel is relatively easy to form and fabricate, which is beneficial to the manufacturing process.
